Guidelines for Antimicrobial Use in the Turkey Industry published by the Turkey Farmers of Canada
Recognizing the increased global attention to the threat of antimicrobial resistance, the Canadian turkey industry has been working towards the implementation of a sector-wide antimicrobial use strategy to eliminate the preventive use of antibiotics important to human medicine. An industry-led initiative will work to maintain and build consumer confidence in Canadian turkey and meet the needs of government, processors, and retailers while maintaining effective treatment options.
As part of the AMU Strategy, Turkey Farmers of Canada has been developing guidance tools to assist industry stakeholders in successful implementation. The Guidelines for Antimicrobial Use in the Turkey Industry were developed in consultation with a range of poultry veterinarians and provide background on AMU and AMR, the turkey industry AMU Strategy, and roles within the strategy. The Guidelines provide clarity to the definitions for disease prevention and treatment, outline common flock health situations on-farm, and management tools to aid with implementation.
